Kyla Ross Retires from Elite Gymnastics

Today is a sad day.

It's sad because 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist, world champion and multiple time world medalist Kyla Ross announced via her Twitter account that she has decided to hang up the grips on her elite career.

Kyla has committed to UCLA for the 2016-2017 season for her collegiate gymnastics career. Originally Kyla had deferred from attending UCLA this season in hopes of making the 2016 Rio Olympic team. Kyla had encountered set backs earlier this seasons and had withdrawn from the 2015 World Championship selection process due to some nagging injuries. Kyla further explained her decision in a statement to USA Gymnastics.

“The past year has been a little rough. I’ve dealt with a lot of injuries, and it hasn’t been my best year competition-wise. I tried to push through, but it was getting difficult to train. I didn’t want to go through with it if my heart wasn’t in it.”

Kyla expanded further, saying she didn't feel the same drive and passion for elite anymore.

“I feel like in 2012 I was really passionate about making that Olympic team and giving it my all. I didn’t have that same feeling this year. I didn’t have the same desire. I wanted to concentrate on getting ready for college.”

Kyla will be in good company at UCLA. She'll join her 2012 teammate, Jordyn Wieber who is the team manager at UCLA. Also joining her is her 2014 World Championship teammate, Madison Kocian and her Gym-Max teammate, Felicia Hano.  Kyla will also be joined by JO wonder twins, Anna and Grace Glenn and former elite and part of Kim Zmeskal's Texas Dreams Dream team, Nica Hults.

In addition to her Olympic hardware, Kyla's many accomplishments include:

2013 World All-Around Silver Medalist
2013 World Uneven Bars Silver Medalist
2013 World Balance Beam Silver Medalist
2013 Wold Floor Exercise Finalist (5th place)

Best of luck to Kyla in the future with all of her life's adventures. Can't wait to see her kicking ass and taking names at UCLA next year!
