Saturday will be the premier of the USA gymnastics will kick off championship season season starting with the Secret Classic, final qualifier to the P&G Championships, for the women.
It's the year before the Olympics, so it's very likely we will see contenders for the Olympic team performing at the meet. There are a plethora of newbies as well as some returning heavy hitters, all of whom have the ultimate goal, to be named to the world championships team for the USA.
The Returning Players:
Perhaps the biggest story coming from this meet is the return of world and Olympic Champions. For the first time since Jesolo, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles will be in the same room and competing at the same meet. Simone, the current two time world all-around champion and Gabby the current Olympic All-around champion, will begin their bid for a spot on the 2015 World Championship team. Gabby and Simone competed together for team USA at the City of Jesolo Trophy where team USA won the gold.
Also returning from a successful season at the University of Oklahoma, Brenna Dowell is making another go at the worlds' team. Shocking? Meh, not really. Brenna was named to the 2013 World Championships and was made an alternate. She tried last year, but was not named to the team after an inconsistent performance at P&G Championships. She proved to be a valuable part of the Sooners' successful (almost) undefeated season. Most likely, she's going to want to make the team for bars, but she's facing stiff competition since there now seems to be a whole slew of bar workers in the USA.
Returning to competition for the first time since 2012 will be Sabrina Vega. Sabrina was a part of the 2011 Tokyo World Championship team where the team brought home the gold medal. Sabrina competed at Olympic Trials and did not make the team. She moved from her gym in New York to train at GAGE with Al and Armine Fong, where she's been since 2013. She confirmed via her Twitter account that she would be competing at Classics, although she won't perform in the all-around. For her, this is kind of a fresh start. Since she hasn't competed in so long, no one is sure what to expect from her.
Newbies:
Bailie Key, the queen of the juniors, undefeated until she sat out the last year of her junior tenure. She made her senior debut in Jesolo and she won a gold medal with the team and took home an individual silver for the all-around and uneven bars. It will be interesting to see Bailie, junior miss "I win everything all the day" competing with the big kids.
Nia Dennis, the owner of the most amazing standing Arabian on beam (besides Rheagan Courville). She recently switched from training at Buckeye with Gabby Douglas and a small army of tiny gymnasts to training at Legacy Elite (home of Anna Li and the Caquatto sisters).
