Keeping Up With The Round Lake Gymnasts

It's time for the latest installment of my favorite reality show, Keeping Up with the Round Lake Gymnasts.

You can't help but love those kids.

A couple of weeks ago, it was rumored that Aliya Mustafina, the grand dame of the Russian gymnastics federation, was taking a break from gymnastics. Well, according to the Couchgymnast.com and an article on ITAR-ITASS, Valentina Rodionenko, aka the Don Corleone of Russian gymnastics, said Aliya is actually only taking a short break to get caught up with her school work and get prepped for her final exams. The Russian team had their first training camp of the year and Princess Aliya was absent for this reason. She should resume her normal training schedule in February.

Anastasia Grishina is back in full force training. Woo hoo!

Viktoria Komova is having a hard time staying not injured. According to ITAR-ITASS, she suffered a minor injury and was recovering at home.

Coming through the ranks and making her debut as a senior this year is Maria Kharenkova, who won the all-around title at the European Youth Olympics in Urecht in 2013. Don Valentina was impressed with Anna Rodionova's debut at the world championships in Antwerp and her goal is to bring her up to be a leader of the team so the Russians do not need to rely so heavily on their veterans.

Speaking of the veterans, Ksenia Afanseyva had her ankle surgery to repair the failed surgery she had in the fall. She is recovering well and Don Valentina hopes she'll be recovered enough to make an appearance at the Russian Championships in Penza, this April.
